Assignment 6

1) Identify one of the examples of ancient marriage described by the author and discuss how it differed from the "one man, one woman idea" of marriage

An ancient example of marriages, that I found most interesting which was discussed by the author, is the people from China located in the Southwestern part, where the people are known as Na. When married you do not live with your significant other or with your children that you may have had. Instead you live with your brothers and or sisters called sibling clusters. During this time, if your sister concieves a child during the passing of a visor, then the brothers help raise that child. This is very different from the way we know, one man, one woman idea of marriage.
2) Among which two groups has postponing marriage become the most likely? Why?

Poor women, because in this group, both parties need to be fully committed and enter in with the knowledge and understanding that they have significant incomes and savings in order for the marriage to work.
Middle-Class women because, there is an increase in opportunities within the labor force for women. Also, they have access to higher education thus leading to postponing marriages.

Assignment 7

HW, Lisa, Today's Divorce Rates-Why is it so high?., HubPages. http://hubpages.com/hub/Why-the-Divorce-Rate-May-Be-So-High. 2011.

African Americans showed to have the highest divorce rates, and the lowest rates of marriage, above all other ethnic groups. It showed how the divorce rates were relatively close, and that in the 60's it was again relatively close.

I believe that divorce and marriage should not be based on the ethnicity of the couple, but rather the circumstances leading to the decission fo proceeding with the divorce and/or marriage. To me this would be inaccurate because its based off of person to person, couple to couple, it is individual and has nothing to do with what you look like. Many people marry for different reasons and divorce for different reasons but rarely do you see people divorcing based on color/ethnicity. I feel that when gathering information and statistics for divorce rates and marriage it should be solely based on how many couples are staying married, how many are getting divorced, and how many people remain single.

Assignment 5

1) According to the article, what percent of Americans polled support gay marriage and why is this news?

45 percent (or 50 percent) of Americans supported gay marriage. This is news because in 1996 when congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act, only 25 percent of Americans supported gay marriage. In 11 years the percentage of American that support gay marriage has doubled.
2) Click on the link to Proposition 8 in the NY Times article. What is Proposition 8? Also, briefly describe the history of Prop 8 over the past few years.

Proposition 8 according to the NY Times, "Proposition 8 was a 2008 California ballot measure that outlawed same-sex marriage.  After its passage, it continued to be one of the central battlefields in the fight over same-sex marriage in the United States." (NY Times).
People who did not support same-sex marriage fought for the rights to be taken away, finally they won, and then people who supported attempted to fight back. When the final Act was passed and same-sex marriage was banned, people of who supported same-sex marriage decided it would be best to wait it out instead of fighting back again.
3) Go to this website:
Defense of Marriage Act Amendment
According to the this amendment, what is the definition of marriage in the U.S.?

"`In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, or of any ruling, regulation, or interpretation of the various administrative bureaus and agencies of the United States, the word `marriage' means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word `spouse' refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.'" (The Library of Congress).
4) Okay, one last website from National Public Radio. Go to this link
NPR state by state map of gay marriage

You can click on a state to see their stand on gay marriage, adoption of Defense of Marriage Act etc. Choose two states and compare their positions on gay marriage. Please don't all choose NJ!

The state of Louisiana passed a constitutional marriage amendment on September 18th, 2004. The state also has adopted a Defense of Marriage Act. Unlike the state of New Hampshire, on June 3rd, 2009 gov. John Lynch signed legislation legalizing gay marriage in New Hampshire. The law will take effect in January 2010, exactly two years after the state legalized civil unions. It includes language giving religious institutions the right to decline to marry same-sex couples. The state passed a Defense of Marriage Act in 2004. New Hampshire state lawmakers twice defeated proposals for a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

Assignment 3

Questions: 1. According to functionalist theory, what was the definition of the "instrumental leader" and what was the definition of an "expressive leader." What family roles were connected to each of these leader definitions?

The instrumental leader is usually the father in the family, and the job or role of this leader is to make sure everything is running smoothly and everyone is doing their job correctly. The expressive leader is usually the mother in the family, and the job or role of this leader is to keep everyone's spirits and morale up and keep everything and everyone happy and motivated.

2. What main demographic change during the 1960s and 1970s led theorists to be critical of the functionalist perspective?

The main demographic change inthe 1960's and the 1970's that led theorists to be critical of the functionalist perspective was that women are working more and making more money for the household. Before this time women often did not work and stayed home. Where they cleaned, cooked, and took care of their husband and kids.

3. In contrast to functionalist theorists, in your own words, what is the main theme of conflict theory?

The conflict theory displays that this is a lack of power and blance or rather an uneven amount. Unlike the functionalist theory where there is a continuous blance and even amount of power.

4. Social exchange theory is based on ideas from what discipline (not sociology). What do exchange theorists say about husbands bargaining power versus that of wives?

Social exchange theory is based on ideas from the economic theories of exchanging goods and services. It allow to open up to see what you can offer and what you can gain. The husbands have more bargaining power versus the wives because the wives are limited on expences and means because the husband is usually the control of those.

5. Feminist theory is based on what main idea?

The feminist theory is based on the idea of inequality between men and women. It goes in depth about gender and how all the differences have been created culturally and by society not biologically.

Assigment 4

I think that from day one children are taught to behave a certain way depending on their gender. People always ask whether you are having a boy or a girl so that they are able to get the right clothes, colors, and toys. No one would ever want to get a girl, a blue blanket, or a boy a pink blanket. We are constantly enforcing the differences between boys and girls into our children's minds. We use colors, types of clothes, and different toys to demonstrate to the children which is for boys and which is for girls. Little girls should "never" be found playing with trains, cars, or legos, just like little boys should "never" be found playing with barbies, dress-ups, or babydolls. I feel that in the beginning children will play with anything. My little 6 month old neice will play with a magazine or box for hours. Which then I could only imagine that if given a toy truck she would do the same. Its only the people giving the toys to her that eventually lead her to believe that, there are some toys for little girls and some toys for little boys.

I have never worked in a school before, but I feel like I have babysat and volunteered as a camp counselor long enough to see how people react. They usually say to the boy, "no, no, you don't want to play dress-ups thats for little girls. Here come play with these blocks or legos." As for when a little girl acts agressive there are usually immediately told  to stop and act like a lady.

Again with the color issue, I feel that girls like pink and boys like blue because that's what they are made to like from the beginning with everything being gender specific by color.

Women in the Workforce

Part 2 Assignment 2

1) What is different about women today versus 40 years ago?
Women are having children far later now then this did 40 years ago. 70% of women at 25 were married with children in 1960 in 2000 only 25% were. Women have decided to work more and longer instead of settling down to get married and raise children. More women are enrolling into schools of the highest mark in education unlike 40 years ago, when women took classes mainly on learning about how to maintain a functioning household.

2) What is the norm in terms of what women are doing and when they are marrying?
Today women who are married are still working and trying to manage the household, which might be why most tend to wait on having children, if they have any at all.
3) Do women work more or less than in the past etc?
Women work more today than in the past. They are competing for jobs that were originally thought of as only for men.

4) Next, please write about what you plan to do as you finish school and reach adulthood. Will you work and get your career started and then marry or the other way around?
My plan is to have my career but if marriage comes first, I won't be discouraged, I still plan on starting my career, I just might hold off on having children for a year or two. Let things settle in first and make sure I have a somewhat stable household. I just really hope that I have children before I'm at least 32-33.

And - just for fun: if you are female: describe which Sex and the City girl you most identify with and why. You can also note your favorite boyfriend/husband. If you are male which main boyfriends do you most identify with and why or which female character would you most like to date. Would you date marry any of them? Why or why not?

I think I would most relate to Carry, because I am very goal driven, but at the same time I would enjoy the lifestyle of being married and finally settling down. My friends and I when we watched the two movies would often say which one we would be since there was four of us too. And the immediately said Carry for me, between Carry and Charlette.

Part 1 Assignment 2

1) Describe 1 or 2 highlights that struck you from the report. Do not cut and paste from the report, use your own words.
The one highlight that struck me the most was the number of two-parent families. The data says that in 1997 the average number was 24.8 million, unlike today where that number has drastically decreased to 23.1 million in 2010. That means only one out of five households have a mother and father and children. This just amazed me because I often wonder why, why today, are people seperating, not getting married, or not having children? What are the reasons for couples getting divorced?

2) Were you surprised by the data/findings on the chart or are they in line with what you would have expected?
I guess I feel that they were in line with what I was expecting. However, they aren't what I wanted them to be. I want to know why people opt to live alone, why so many don't want to have children, and why married couples feel that divorce is the way out. I know that there are many reasons that call for a divorce, but do they all? This chart just sparked more questions for me.

3) What do you notice on the chart?
I noticed that back in 1995 more people stayed together, more people had children, and less people were likely to remain single. Unlike in 2010 where more people split up, more people didn't want to have children, and more people were likely to remain living single.

3a.) What types of families are more typical (higher percentage) compared to 1995.
the highest percentage that I found in 2010 was married couples without children.

3b.) What types of families are becoming less the norm (percentage decreases from 1995 to 2010.
married couples with children, single fathers, single mothers. Basically households with children.

4) What type of family do you expect to be living in, in 5 years? In 10 years? When you are 70 years old?
In the next five years I hope to be married, with the possibility of kids on the way. In ten years I hope to be living in a married with children family, and in 70 years I hope to be married and watching my grandchildren grow.

assignment 1

I am a FCST major, my concentration is Child Life Specialist. I chose this major because when I was younger I looked up to my Child Life Specialist which made me want to be just like her. Also because of the fact that I was unable to be a fighter pilot in the air force because of medical reasonings.
My current career plans are to have a career in the field I am studying. I do plan to marry, for rich or poor, doesn't matter to me as long as I'm happy, safe, and stable. I love to travel and wish my job in the future could some how be condusive to traveling, but since it is not I plan on doing as much traveling on my on time as I can afford.

I am obviously currently a student, a Junior to be exact. I transfered to MSU from University of Delaware. I live in south Jersey with my Mom, older sister, Mimi (grandmother), two dogs (both of which are females) My mom's partner and her niece. Which makes for seven women under one roof, believe me it can get crazy but is always fun at the same time. During school however I live on campus with my three friends. I am 21 years old and love to play sports, I run for MSU's womens track team but I enjoy many other sports as well.

The funniest thing that has ever happpened to me would probably be the time when I was explaining to my one roommate how my sisters tease me on how I'm so weird that they think I'm adopted, and then my roommate goes, "I am adopted". We were both laughing so hard I cried and we still talk about this today.
What might be interesting about me is, I am a huge patriots and red sox fan, I love flying, I have an obsession with going to the beach as much as I possibly can, I am a horrible person to hold a conversation with in texting, I am teaching myself how to play the guitar, I used to play the piano, trumpet, and sang, I am slightly an adrenaline junkie, and I hate lady bugs.

My mom and dad are divorced, I have two sisters, one who still lives with my mom, and the other is married with a six month old baby girl (and still complains on having the middle child syndrom). My mom has one brother, and he has four kids all two years a part. I have a big family that seems to grow every year. My mimi who is my mom's mom comes from eighteen brothers and sisters that we know of. My mom's partner, Joanne, also has a huge italian family who is always in and out of our house. But that's just the way I like it.

I think that' the group project with using the book is going to be very interesting, I am actually very excited to start working on it and see the differences, and how the self help books we all think are so helpful really aren't.
I like the blogger, I have never used a blog before, but I love writing so I'm thinking this will be fun and easy for me to keep up with.

I kind of like Wiki, Its different and I find it easy to navigate. I think it might be better and more informative than blackboard and I'm glad we are using it.
